I use Invision Power Board only because that's what Invisionfree uses. Otherwise, I would probably use something like vBulletin.

I'm a big fan of vBulletin. Long time ago, I used to use wBB and was a fan of IPB (when they claimed that even 2.0 will be free). But now, vBulletin 3.6.1 kicks all the other boards. Smiley

http://www.forumotion.com is pretty decent, especially as there's few places today that offer free PHP & MySQL which most forums require. Plus, its hassle-free (takes 2 minutes from clicking "sign up" to actually seeing your forum!), and its the same as this forum, just without all the tasty paid-for goodies

As for overall, I prefer IPB. I'm a member of several IPB forums but I do not own one because you have to pay for licenses (or get a nulled copy, but I'm not doing that:P ).
As for free forums, I prefer (and use) phpBB3.
