Post exchange is one of more effective ways to get your forum up and running, but you have really tough time finding a good forum post exchange partner depending on the topic of your forum.  For example, if you set up a Nottingham Forest Football Club support forum, you will probably have tough time finding a post exchange partner who can contribute.  If you set up a webmaster/seo forum, finding a post exchange partner(s) is easy.  Some topics just don't get response unfortunately.

Is true. Is more easy to find a webmaster or some people with enough skills in design/graphics than a fan for a soccer club. Exactly the same is with other forums (Ex. tailoring Smiley ) Is hard to get "profesional" people for a lot of forums. Anyway a webmaster forum is not so easy to build, but in the same time a pet forum is more easy, because are more pet owners than webmasters Smiley

because there are more pet owners than webmasters
And more webmaster forums than pet related forums.
Also sites for webmasters should be well designed and done, because the people that visit these boards know about design, you can't just use a free skin, or crappy software.
They always look at the best places to stay and with so many forums it's hard to be the one people chose.

I don't disagree, but I don't think it's that important when you're just starting up a forum, exchanging posts and building some content.

It's best to find a post exchange partner who owns a forum that you yourself would enjoy posting in. Don't just pick any forum for the sake of getting more posts on yours.

I'm agree with you. You need to build QUALITY content. In this way you have big chances to have users what are comming back to post.

I think the fact that there are more webmaster forums then pet forums also has something to do with it too.  It would be like trying to setup a computer forum.  There are already so many of them it is tough to break into the market.  I think if you specialize in a crowded section you can be more successful.

Yes, but it's difficult to find a specialized subject which you have knowledge and have contacts with.

I've noticed that with post exchanges a lot of the time people just post a ton of off-topic threads if you have an off topic section, or just greet every single member in the 'Welcome new members' section.

I think it is important to place restrictions on how many posts a partner can make in certain forums, and place a minimum word count too.

I've been trying to set up long term exchanges with people who are good post exchange partners, but I haven't had much luck in that department either - people tend to do a small amount, then get bored Sad

As long as you have ENOUGH topics, any exchange can work. if people cannot post in the most specialized parts, they can surely post in the general chat and the exchange can work in the end. The problem I see is that many admins just start exchanges and have NO topics in the site. With due respect, I am gonna reply, not start threads and do the admin's job.

Just PM them and let them know that they cannot be just welcoming members who signed up before them.  Let me know that they can't be posting ...

"Me, too."
"I agree."
"I disagree."
"Thanks for the link."
Etc.

If they decide to not continue after your PM, then you need to let them go ...

Yip, got a lot of that from post exchanges.
I think the best for post exchanges are for those with the same topics/interest.

I think I mentioned this in this forum, but making a personal contact helps.  PM, email, etc.  Unfortunately the vast majority of forum owners severely lack patience, but there are also many forum owners who take forum development seriously.  It would be helpful if you can establish a direct communication.

The general rule for post exchanges is to keep it to sites in a similar theme to your own or something you are genuinely interested in, and expect the same in return.
I only do post exchange with sites that I have an interest in.
and I am fairly sure that the people I exchange posts with find both my forum and my posts both usefull, informative, witty and in general beter quality than the average internet newbie who has just bought a computer and needs help despamming his harddrive from porn related viruses.
