SEO covers a lot of aspects.
Bit difficult to give some tips on SEO in general.
Here are a few things:
- avoid session ID's in your url's!!!
- give all image an alt tag
- use meta tags
- use h1 tags for important things

I read from somewhere a lot of major search engines do not that use of meta tags.

Dnt sure whether this is true. But there are others claiming it's good.

google doesn't realy use them.
But I believe that yahoo still does, and some smaller search engines aswell.
So doesn't hurts to have them, and is an advantage for other search engines.

No, Yahoo doesn't use them. Google, Yahoo and MSN don't, smaller ones do.

1. You must make sure that all your pages are visible to SE.

2. You should hide session id strings from SE.

3. Link building is kind of tricky, and it is advisable that you study this extensively while you go visit various forums and post number of questions in forums like this one.

4. Content creation is very very important.

Keyword research is important.  Find out what terms people are using when searching for content in your niche and then integrate those terms into your content, title, urls, etc.  Try something like http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

True to a large extend, but you need to make sure that every page creates a unique meta description.  It appears that Google cares about that.  If all pages have the same meta description, Google may think that all pages are so similar that they do not need to have high rankings.

How about the URL itself ?
Any thoughts whether this will help ?

It's better to have flattened out descriptive URL strings.  It seems that Google is addressing this, but Yahoo and MSN have some market share.  Also flattened out descriptive URL strings are kind of helpful to users.

EO is an acronym for "search engine optimization" or "search engine optimizer." Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners, including:

Review of your site content or structure
Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript
Content development
Management of online business development campaigns
Keyword research
SEO training
Expertise in specific markets and geographies.
