I think you can survive without google.. most traffic doesn't come from google unless you can get your website indexed on the first few pages. But I have to agree with TheGodFather, you will need good advertising. Smiley

It really depends on what you want to accomplish, but you need to a strategy to get good rankings in Google in the long term.  Google is not as dominant as it once was after the emergence of sites like MySpace, YouTube and Digg, but Google is THE search engine.  So, you can't just ignore it.

You need to acquire links.  You need to design your site to get high visibility.  You need to keep adding content.  No matter what search engine you optimize your site for, you need to work on all these.  However, Google has its own mechanisms to rank your site.  When Google finds a problem in your site, you can't just ignore it.  That's all I'm saying ...

There are other platforms like del.icio.us, but they are much too small compared to Google and other search engines.  I hear that MySpace gets a lot of traffic, but I'm not so sure if MySpace can be as powerful as Google when you use it as a marketing tool.  I don't like that the fact that I need to tailor my sites to get traffic from Google, but ... that's what I need to do now.

I really depends on what you are aiming at. There are many types of marketing that would work better depending on your site.

Organic traffic is always the best, but you never know when they can just drop you like that.
