Organic traffic is always the best, but you never know when they can just drop you like that.

Very very scary, and it does happen.  I wasn't spending much time learning about SEO (new stuff) for the last couple of months, but the latest Google update hit me pretty hard, so I'm learning new stuff now.  I also need to do some experiment and go through routines as well like submitting to search directories.

Organic traffic is always the best, but you never know when they can just drop you like that.

You always want to diversify.  You want to get traffic from Google, Yahoo, MSN/Live and Ask.  You want to get traffic directly from users.  Depending on your site's revenue model, you might want to get traffic using advertising.  However, ... given Google's market share, it makes sense to put a lot of effort in Google SEO.

Without any ranking in Google, you'll lost big in ROI. Google and Yahoo are SEs where people mostly search for anything they want to.

It's good to ask yourself the question 'can I survive without Google?'.  Any business needs to plan for that eventuality.  You hear of sites receiving penalties - sometimes where the penalised is innocent - are it's imperative that you are able to survive that eventuality. Be careful to never become too reliant on Google.
