I am setting up two sites on new domains now, so I just set up place holders and pointed signature links to them.  It appears that Google indexed them now, so I guess that signature links do work (to a limited extent).  I doubt if signature links can improve rankings, but they are pretty useful still.

It depends on whether the forum on are on gets indexed often or not.
And some forums use mods to get the nofollow tag on signatures.

Yeah, I know.  Some just hide signature links.  Understandable though, since it doesn't seem like that Google wants to see a bunch of outbound links.

If you want to make use of signature links, then you need to check if they are visible to SE or not before you register and start posting.

A medium sized forum would be better than a large one. Large forums usually have some sort of "guard" against too many outbound links.

That's my guess.  Signature links (in one forum) look the same.  For example, I can make 1000 posts in this forum, and I can get 1000 signature links.  But they all look the same, and my guess is that it doesn't give much credibility in the eyes of Google.  A link in a thread, on the other hand, probably looks more authentic and trustworthy.

Or it could be just some forums have the nofollow tag on the signature links.
