CentOS 4.4 is the newest version. Maybe you are talking about 3.x series Smiley These are the old versions.

As far as I know, meaning of 4.4 is this: RHEL 4 Update 4

So, if the guys on Red Hat upgrades RHEL (which means Red Hat Enterprise Linux), CentOS guys update their distro also.

Nearly all datacenters use the option to install CentOS 4.4 . The others are Debian or Fedora in general.

I prefer Pardus which is a Turkish linux project supported by the government if I use Turkish in my documents (well, you may understand from my older posts that I am a Turk)

But in general, I am using English (at school, at projects, at laboratory, in Operating System etc.) so that I don't need that Pardus distro. So I use the new king Smiley Fedora Core (the old one is Red Hat 9)

Anyway, if you want to check out Pardus, you can visit their website: http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/index.html

And, as far as I know, CentOS guys are still working on this project Smiley

(Well, your server is using Debian. As a server, Debian is the most stable free one but generally big companies prefer RHEL as server. In our department in school, we are using a Debian server but in a company that I know in my city, IT department uses RHEL. That is a private telecom company.)

I work on linux from 95/96 ... kernel 1.1.2 or something like that Smiley  and I started with slackware ... I used ... Slackware (1 - 2years) Redhat (1 -2 years) Mandrake (2 yeares) and after that ... just Debian ... After so much years in Linux ... I'm stabilized in Debian (4 or more years) ... from my opinion no distro compares with Debian ...
What attracted me on Debian ? First thing was package management ... very robust and fast . Second I was atracted by security policy applied on packages . Third I was attracted by it's philosophy . Four was the big number of arhitecture ... and more ...  Smiley

Cheesy

I was met with linux by a Mandrake 7 CD Smiley I don't know when really Smiley But that's not too old (7-8 years maybe)

I continued to use Mandrake series (8, 9.x) but I didn't like the way Mandrake behaved (they changed the upgrade system only for susbscribed users)

Then, I moved to Red Hat 9. I used it in 2003 (I remember very clearly) but in 2003, Red Hat 9 became old, so I upgraded to Fedora. I liked the way Fedora constructed. So I continued.

1 year later, I need a Windows Box for my school projects, so I bought a WinXP (well, that deal is a bit tricky Smiley I don't want to talk about it Smiley) I used it for long long years (until today)

Today I am still using a Windows box but I want to change it to a Linux box. So, nowadays I am searching for a reliable distro. I tried Ubuntu (I am afraid of using Debian Smiley It is too complicated for me. Well, users of Debian don't say a word like "complicated" but, I like to fine tune my OS but I cannot do it in Debian. I don't know why Smiley)

I tried CentOS (well, I even couldn't install PHP on CentOS Smiley So I made a research because generally all servers use CentOS. I found that CPanel configures all Cheesy Therefore, if you install CPanel, you don't have to worry about your configuration.)

Now, I am trying Fedora Core 6. Well Smiley it is still my favourite Smiley I don't know but Fedora is very simple to understand in my case Smiley maybe I got used to it Tongue

Well, I know I know I killed the SEO topic Cheesy

Anyway, I will ask about Apache in related topic I think. Because I couldn't manage to do some kind of setting about ~user system of Apache... Smiley
