I've been thinking about re-designing a site just to run contextual ads.  CTR doesn't look great, and it needs to improve.  What are possible downsides of doing this?

Check with your ad providers TOS as well because for some like Google that could be a violation.

But who would want to run into a page fully of ads?

And yeah, I think you would have to have real content for google ads.

There is a danger that if you make your content look too similar to your ads then it will annoy people.  If you have a site that doesn't rely on return visitors then it's going to be a plus.

But ... does this really affect sites that expect to have returning visitors?  If they visit sites so often, wouldn't they start kind of blocking out ads in their minds?  Ok, if ads are as intrusive as pop-up and pop-under, then there is a problem, but can contextual ads become so annoying?

I'm new in this bussines ... but I think returning visitors are more important than your ads. Over the time the returned visitors will start get you some profit.

I would try to balance everything: have the content for the visitors and the ads too. I hate seeing some of those adsense sites. I cannot read the content since it's filled with over-optimized words and I just get a head ache after 2 minutes. I would rely on a good content. Rich keywords, but still "user friendly"
